Our First Christmas in Sioux Falls: Finding New Traditions

Christmas is a magical time of year, filled with joy, reflection, and the traditions that make the season special. When we moved to Sioux Falls in 2021, we found ourselves stepping into the unknown. We didn’t know anyone in the area, and our first Christmas felt a little uncertain. With no family close by and none of our usual holiday traditions, we had to start fresh. Looking back, though, that first Christmas became a turning point for us. It marked the beginning of discovering new holiday traditions that now feel like home.

If you’re spending the holidays in Sioux Falls or looking to add new traditions of your own, I hope these ideas will inspire a little holiday magic for you and your family.

Local Christmas Fun in Sioux Falls

Falls Park Winter Wonderland

One of our first discoveries was Falls Park Winter Wonderland, and it truly felt like stepping into a Christmas card. Over 350,000 twinkling lights and 270 beautifully decorated trees create an awe-inspiring display. Learn more here.

We bundled up, braved the cold, and were rewarded with stunning views of the illuminated falls. It was freezing, but these memories of sparkling lights still make me smile.

Neighborhood Christmas Light Displays

Loading up the car with mugs of hot cocoa to explore neighborhood light displays quickly became a favorite family tradition. I love how Sioux Falls neighborhoods truly embrace the season. Here are a few of our must-see spots:

  • Luminary Lane: The over-the-top decorations here make it feel like stepping into a holiday movie set. If the weather allows, bundle up and stroll through—you won’t regret it!

  • The Little Churches on Churchill: We stumbled across these charming miniature churches one night, and they’ve been a yearly stop ever since. There’s something so quaint and nostalgic about them.

  • Lights on Lotta: This street goes all out with synchronized light shows set to holiday music. It’s a must-see, and I recommend tuning into the posted radio station to enjoy the full experience.

Christmas Movies at the State Theatre

Of course, you can always watch these movies at home, but when I found out that the historic State Theatre downtown plays all our favorite Christmas classics, it quickly became one of our favorite holiday traditions. The cozy seats, movie theater popcorn, and beautifully restored setting make it such a special experience. See what's playing here.

Pictured here are my husband and I at Fernson Downtown, just a few doors down from the theater, grabbing a delicious bite and beers before—can you guess? (National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, of course!)

Christmas at the Capitol in Pierre

Since 1981, Christmas at the Capitol in Pierre has been a cherished South Dakota tradition. The Capitol building comes alive with over 100 beautifully decorated trees, creating a breathtaking display of lights, ornaments, and holiday spirit. Strolling through the rotunda and halls feels magical, with a sense of connection to our beautiful home state of South Dakota.

Each day, choirs and carolers from across South Dakota perform in the rotunda, adding to the joyful atmosphere. You can check out the schedule and list of choirs here. This year, we’re especially excited to experience it again on December 20th to hear our daughter sing with the Washington High School Soprano/Alto Choir. Below are some photos from our visit last year—it was so pretty!

Still on Our Bucket List

South Dakota's holiday season is filled with magic across the state. From the glittering lights of Falls Park in Sioux Falls to the festive charm of historic Deadwood and the dazzling Christmas displays at the Capitol in Pierre, every corner of South Dakota celebrates the season with warmth and wonder.

If you’re visiting Sioux Falls this Christmas or thinking about making this wonderful city your home, I’m here to help! I’m always happy to share more local favorites or help you discover the best our city has to offer.

Wishing you a season filled with joy, new traditions, and lasting memories!
